I am a woman sculptor. I carve stone as well as create works in bronze. My ability is not believed because I am a woman. I have been partners with a male sculptor for over 20 years and it is believed that he carves my work- which is not true - while he is much stronger, he does not have my ability. Stone carving is seen as needing great physical strength but with power tools (angle grinders, die grinders, air hammers) that is not necessary. Men are threatened by women who have greater skill than they possess - the local sculptors know my skill and it threatens them - I have been called "witch". Women are seen as lesser in all fields because men want to see them as lesser.

I find your article of great interest.

About this topic I've read "The Obstacle Race", the 1979 book written by the Australian writer Germaine Greer—of which I possess the 1980 Edition by Bompiani titled “Le tele di Penelope”—and I find pertinent the chapter dedicated to Mary Cassatt too, contained in "American Art and Artists", written by Tricia Wright for the Smithsonian Q&A manuals.

As I am a translator EN>IT, I am interested to know whether you are planning of translating this and related articles into Italian.

One of the medieval Popes harlotised Mary Magdalene and dictated that women were not to be educated as they were to be the sacks for men's seed (I believe in the 11th century); short life spans made even shorter by the possibility of dying in childbirth, probably meant that a lot of female talent never had a chance to develop.

Having studied Artemisia Ghentileschia at BA Level, produced a BA dissertation on the photographer, Lee Miller and a Master's dissertation on Levina Teerlinc (her story as the prequel to my novel on Nicholas Hilliard, The Truth of the Line, in progress under my nom de plume Melanie V Taylor), it is refreshing to find that the quest for finding great women artists continues. Too many women artists have been condemned for their gender, irrespective of their talent. The Victorian novel portrays women as learning watercolour, this allegedly being the medium best suited to their talents. It is interesting that men thought the unforgiving medium of watercolour, acknowledged by many male artists as incredibly difficult which is why they use oil, as the one one best suited to female abilities!

Well Done, Ivan, for continuing the search for great women painters, but I have to say that I think that Artemesia's work (the debate continues as to attribution to her father for some pieces, as it does for Leyster/Hals and others) is as good as Titian and outstrips her muse, Caravaggio (another one of my artistic heroes), for powerful drama and painterlyness in her several portrayals of the story of Judith & Holofernes (Uffizzi is the best version in my opinion). Thank you for helping balance the opinion regarding women artists.

Very interesting article. Is so true, many women had used even a male name for their work. A woman artist
has still less value of men artist. Who knows how long it will take before there is equality.
